THE TRAGIC STORY OF CLEOPATRA AND MARK ANTONY: DEAD AS A RESULT OF "WRONG INFORMATION?

You have probably already heard about the legendary love between Cleopatra and Mark Antony. But do you know the real story behind this couple whose reputation has endured over time without changing? If you read it carefully, you will find the timeless ingredients that make great love that lasts -- often until the last breath of both partners! 

Cleopatra (69 B.C. - 30 B.C.) and Mark Antony (83 B.C. - 30 B.C.) fell instantly in love with each other when they first met in Egypt. At the time, Cleopatra was queen of Egypt and Mark Antony was triumvir, the highest magistrate representing Rome in that country. A triumvir is a member of a group of three people (triumvirate) sharing power. Before meeting Mark Antony, Cleopatra had been the mistress of Julius Caesar, more for political reasons than for true love.

When Mark Antony fell in love with Cleopatra, he was part of a triumvirate where only the second representative, Octavian, reigned over the Western Roman Empire. Mark Antony was the head of the Eastern Roman Empire.

To consolidate his power, Mark Antony had to marry Octavian's sister. However, at the time when the marriage is celebrated, in 40 BC, Cleopatra gave birth to twins that she had with Mark Antony! Four years later, they even had another son. 

However, a military defeat will seal their fate. Indeed, Mark Antony being a famous warlord, Octavian feared that he would become emperor ruling over the East and the West at the same time!

So, in 31 BC, the army of Octavian and the army 
of Mark Antony (supported by Cleopatra?s) faced each other in the naval battle of Actium. Unfortunately, the troops of Mark Antony were defeated. The lovers were separated and eventually committed suicide in 30 B.C. Mark Antony ended his life with a sword while Cleopatra died from the venom of the sacred royal snake. But this story does not end here! 

It is all the more tragic because Mark Antony was falsely informed of Cleopatra's death... She had not betrayed him and she was still alive.

As a result of this false information, Mark Antony decided that he did not want to live without her. Upon learning of his suicide, Cleopatra, out of her mind with grief, decided to put an end to her life too!
